Jay DeLong, Lead Woodchuck

Located in the Tehaleh Community of Bonney Lake, WA, 9Boards specializes in creating goods from repurposed lumber. We also reuse hardware whenever possible, and complete our designs with high-quality, earth friendly finishes like linseed oil, teak oil, bees wax and natural stains.

Lead Woodchuck, Jay DeLong, is focused on creating products from reclaimed and repurposed materials. He has a longtime love for wood and the nostalgia it brings to a home. Growing up with a Sawyer for a Dad, he was accustomed to working with wood, living in a home surrounded by furniture from master furniture makers, and just being in the woodshop. He is excited at the opportunity to bring products that have been made from reclaimed wood to people seeking unique pieces that have a story to tell.

A native of upstate New York, Jay is a classically trained chef by trade with a degree in Gastronomy and World Wine & Beer Studies. His career as a chef has allowed him to see the world in a different way, drawing inspiration from a thirst to create. He began 9Boards from two old wine barrels given to him by a winemaker friend. The beautiful curves of the staves reminded him of a modern Tudor style of furniture. That was all it took and he has been creating ever since.

Why 9?

The name “9Boards” is a homage to Jay’s heritage. The Irish are known as hard workers and jacks of all trades. In Irish numerology the number nine was completeness. It is triplication of the triple and the synthesis of the three elements of human consideration, physical, mental and spiritual. It is new as well as complete.

Naoi (ni:): Nine is the most magical number in Irish symbology. It occurs frequently throughout the lore such as the “Nine hazel trees at Segais Well,” the “nine” hostages of Niull, the nine waves the Milesians retreated before giving battle to the Tuatha de Danann, etc. The number nine was completeness. It is triplication of the triple and the synthesis of the three elements of human consideration, physical, mental and spiritual. It is new as well as complete. It is no surprise that in the ninth position stands the month of Coll, the Hazel tree, symbol of wisdom as well as nurturing
